Job Description

The Department of Medicine, Division of Liver Diseases and the Institute for Next Generation Healthcare (INGH) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have a joint two-year full-time position available immediately for a post-doctoral researcher to develop eMERGE algorithms and apply Natural Language of Progressing (NLP) algorithms a) to precisely define liver diseases including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), alcoholic liver disease, and risk-stratified hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related disease, b) to identify patients who have these liver diseases, c) to investigate the impact of environmental and toxic exposures on liver disease prevalence and disease progression, and d) to proposed therapeutic options tailored to a patient's phenotyping profile. The candidate will work with clinicians, other biomedical researchers, and data scientists within the INGH and Division of Liver Disease at Mount Sinai in a multidisciplinary environment.
" Develop and apply Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to extract data from free-text clinical notes.
" Build tools and approaches for integrated big data analytics using various database sources, including EMR, the World Trade Center (WTC) data center, and publically-available (environmental) data.
" Collaborate with scientists and clinicians on eMERGE algorithm development for liver diseases.
" Develop and apply topological analysis methods for disease subtype stratification and patient profiling.
" Identify opportunities for drug repurposing and delineate previously-unrecognized side effects of medications.
" Propose and prototype novel algorithms and informatics solutions for predictive healthcare.
" Create, identify and harden approaches using modern software tools for data analytic needs.
" Support the data-related needs of clinical researchers and clinicians, e.g., querying and guiding the statistical analysis of clinical data.
" The ideal applicant would have a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, computational biology or a related field.
" Experience in algorithm and software development.
" Experience in machine learning, NLP, data and text mining.
" Facility with Python, Java, C++, R, or other programming languages.
" Knowledge of relational databases, SQL (MySQL and Oracle preferred).
" Work well on a multidisciplinary team
" Background with biological or medical concepts is highly preferred.
" Excellent written and verbal communication skills
" Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
