What You’ll Do:

 The Sleep Technician performs all types of sleep disorder testing, including set-up and performance of nocturnal polysomnograms (PSGs) on all age groups. Must demonstrate working knowledge of polysomnography, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), oximetry and administration of supplemental O2, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP and/or BPAP) studies, and the basics of Sleep Medicine, and recognizes cardiac arrhythmia. Demonstrates organizational, computer, interpersonal and technical skills to complete quality studies in a timely and accurate manner.


Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Gathers and Analyzes Patient Information
Ø Reviews history, physical information, medications, procedure request, and study protocol. Communicates with the Medical Director as necessary.
Ø Checks voice mail upon arrival to the lab.
Ø Completes and verifies documentation.
Ø Assists in explaining the procedure and orienting the patient to the sleep center.
Ø Attempts to locate no-shows and to fill unexpected openings using Stand-By Waiting List. Checks with Lab Supervisor and/or Medical Director if fewer than usual patients on the list. 

2. Testing Preparation Procedures
Ø Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.
Ø Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and protocol.
Ø Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary

3. Polysomnographic Procedures
Ø Follows procedural protocols for diagnostic polysomnography (NPSG) Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), PAP and oxygen titration, etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data.
Ø Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)
Ø Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary.
Ø Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitates coring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
Ø Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
Ø Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)

Ø Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Ø Recognizes sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

Ø Recognizes clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) as per professionally accepted guidelines.

4. Service Management and Professional Issues
Ø Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues, and Rules of Ethics and Conduct Guidelines.
Ø Performs routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
Ø Maintains current CPR /BCLS certification.
Ø Demonstrates effective written and spoken communication skills.
Ø Demonstrates appropriate social skills.
Ø Demonstrates ability to follow direction
Ø Responds to study participant’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information

 

 

What you’ll Bring:

Education:

High school graduate/GED, with at least 6 months of experience as a polysomnographic technician OR successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year duration, associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility.

Experience:
None if successfully completed a polysomnographic technician program, otherwise a minimum of 6 months experience.
