Job Title: Social Worker (WTC Program)
Roles & Responsibilities:
This position is in a program that provides medical and mental health monitoring, treatment, and follow-up care to rescue, recovery, restoration, and clean-up workers who responded to Ground Zero following 9/11 and are diagnosed with World Trade Center (WTC)-related physical and mental illnesses. The Social Worker is responsible for providing clinical services to WTC responders being seen in the Mount Sinai World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program.
In addition to assessment and treatment of 9/11-related mental health problems, and crisis intervention, responsibilities include providing WTC-related psychosocial services. Social workers educate and counsel patients about public benefits and resources; assist patients in filing for WTC-related workers’ compensation claims; determine eligibility for additional social services and make appropriate referrals; assist patients and physicians in coordinating medical and mental health treatment for the patient for WTC-related and non-WTC-related conditions; continuously locate resources to meet the immediate and ongoing needs of patients; help patients who are uninsured or underinsured to access health care; actively collaborate with interdisciplinary team including physicians, PCAs, nurses, mental health providers, phone bank staff, and others around patient care needs and issues; maintain records to document patient visits; participate in case conferences and general staff meetings; collaborate with outside agencies regarding patient needs and services; advocate for patients to facilitate access to various benefits, resources, and treatment needs. The social worker may lead patient education groups.
This position may require evening and weekend hours.
• New York State LMSW or LCSW.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish OR English/Polish).
• Excellent engagement and assessment skills.
• Excellent collaborative skills, with ability to work flexibly in a high-volume, fast-paced setting.
• Knowledge of public benefits programs and interest in learning about issues specific to population, including e.g., occupational safety and health issues, unions, workers’ compensation, employees’ rights.
• Experience conducting mental health assessments with mental health treatment experience, especially with PTSD, preferred.
• Experience with unions or worker organizations desirable.
