Director, Foundation & Corporate Philanthropic Relations (CFR)  

 

A seasoned foundations professional, the Director, Foundation & Corporate Philanthropic Relations (CFR) will be a leader in building outreach and expanding the portfolio for corporate and foundation giving as part of the Mount Sinai Health System’s $1.5 billion capital campaign. The Director will report to and work closely with the Executive Director of Development for Institutional Relations for ongoing strategic and quantitative analysis of the foundation and corporate philanthropic department’s efforts, for thoughtful outreach to institutional partners, appropriate leveraging of relationships, and engagement of new foundations.  She or he will staff selected faculty and leadership in meetings with foundations, and will be responsible with the Executive Director for increasing the number and quality of departmental proposal submissions.  The Director will manage a portfolio of independent and corporate foundations, and will have direct supervisory responsibility for the Assistant Director and the Program Officer for the CFR department.

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

 
  • With the Executive Director:
    • Assist CFR staff with aligning Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) strategic priority needs with foundation interests;
    • Engage new wealth and new foundations;
    • Collaborate with major gift officers to support fundraising for priority campaign areas;
    • Focus on change in the foundation world including leadership, staffing, and trends in giving; identify and research new foundations;  develop MSHS strategies to respond to new collaborative initiatives among foundations and new initiatives from individual foundations;
    • Secure high-level cultivation and outreach meetings at priority foundations for President, Dean, Research Dean, Hospital Presidents, and key physicians and scientists as appropriate. The Director will staff some of these meetings as appropriate;
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director to manage stewardship for higher level strategic outreach;
    • Identify CFR best practices across academic medicine, recommend and implement ways to strengthen operations; and foster collaborations with major gifts officers.
 
  • The Director will take a lead role in:
    • Pipeline development (for the full CFR team) aligned with Mount Sinai’s strategic priorities;
    • Assisting CFR staff in developing, expanding, and fully realizing the philanthropic potential of each portfolio;
    • Identifying and leveraging trustee and donor connections with priority prospects as appropriate;
 
  • Manage a portfolio of foundations, selected family foundations, corporate foundations, and selected non-biopharma corporations.
 
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree; advanced degree preferred .Education in science and/or medicine a plus
  • Ideal Candidates will have a minimum of 7 years of direct fundraising experience in sophisticated and complex organizations. He/she will have demonstrated success in raising six and seven figure gifts, show evidence of setting and achieving goals, and will have a successful track record of working with internal and external constituents.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have worked in academic medical setting and /or complex nonprofit fundraising environment and have experience with capital campaigns. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products and
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge Fundraising Database
  • Maturity as evidenced by successful record of working with faculty, and experience collaborating with major gift officers
  • Ability to move quickly from strategic focus to detailed operations management
  • Sense of humor, balance, and perspective
  • Superior oral and written communications. A writing sample is required.
  • The ability to work within an environment that emphasizes teamwork as well as individual initiative; high tolerance for ambiguity 
  • Sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy
  • Ability to honor confidentiality
  • Interest in science and medicine a plus.
