Roles & Responsibilities: 

A laboratory at Mount Sinai School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Research Technician in the Department of Pharmacological Sciences. The individual who fills this position will provide technical assistance in a lab that studies electrophysiology and calcium signaling in heart cells to understand normal cardiac physiology, as well as disease states such as heart failure. The successful candidate will perform physiological experiments, manage the laboratory with ordering and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and assist in the analysis of data. He/she must be comfortable performing experiments and dissections on laboratory animals, specifically rats.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Isolate individual cells from rat hearts
  • Manage and maintain the laboratory
  • Perform physiological experiments on heart cells
  • Supervise work-study students
  • A Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or related discipline is required
  • Applicants must know how to use standard laboratory instruments such as balances, pH meters, microscopes, etc.
  • Other qualifications that are desirable, but not necessarily required, include the following:
    • Experience with laboratory animals, particularly small rodents
    • Experience in a biomedical engineering or biomathematics setting
    • Experience with computer programming tools such as MATLAB, Python, or R
