Roles & Responsibilities:
The Senior Genetic Counselor will be involved in all aspects of the clinical work within the Center and will supervise junior Genetic Counselors in the Center. The Genetic Counselor must be adept at eliciting and recording detailed family history and medical history information; interpreting genetic variants; assessing genetic disease risk; returning genetic results to patients and/or referring physicians. The Genetic Counselor should be comfortable discussing complex genetic and health information with individuals of diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. The Genetic Counselor will serve as the Center’s primary contact for patients, referring physicians, and other providers. The Genetic Counselor may have the opportunity to participate in translational research activities in the Center including, but not limited to, demonstrating the clinical utility and cost effectiveness of the program. 

Other responsibilities include: 
  • Consenting patients
  • Reviewing and summarizing medical records
  • Coordinating clinical visits and clinical genetic testing
  • Providing pre-test and post-test counseling/education/support for patients and families
  • Developing written educational materials for patients and providers
  • Preparing and delivering presentations to professional and lay audiences
  • Assisting with patient and provider outreach activities
  • Supervising Master’s level genetic counseling students in clinical rotations
  • Assisting with supervision of Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics residents/fellows in clinical rotations
  • Participating in educational initiatives related to the Center for Population Genomic Health
  • Participating in administrative meetings of the Center for Population Genomic Health
Requirements:
  • Master of Science in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited institution
  • Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as a Genetic Counselor
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with returning results from genome and/or exome sequencing data.
