Looking for postdoctoral researchers to pursue studies in neural protection and regeneration in mammalian retinas. For neural protection, the new postdoc will carry out independent studies to understand the pathogenesis and molecular underpinnings of retinal ganglion cell death in glaucoma mouse models, and design and execute experimental strategies to save retinal ganglion cells by manipulating intracellular signaling pathways. For neural regeneration, the new postdoc will perform in vivo experiments to reprogram mature mouse Muller glia in vivo to generate new retinal neurons using a two-step gene transfer method, to first turn Muller glia to retinal stem cells and then to differentiate these cells to retinal neurons. The ultimate goal of the research is to restore the regenerative capability of mammalian retinas for self-repair in retinal degenerative diseases.
