- The Post-Doctoral position provides a training and expertise in design and execution of basic and translational research studies for NIH-funded research, as well as NASA Space Radiation and Translational Research Institute for Space Research Programs. With a broad range of skills and experience, this individual is a critical component of the Principle Investigator’s laboratory, demonstrating a capacity for collaboration and innovation with consistently high productivity.
1. Designs and conducts complex basic and translational research studies.
2. Analyzes and interprets data from research studies.
3. Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies.
4. Develops hypotheses to be tested and methodology for evaluating results.
5. Communicates research results to the scientific community via published papers.
6. Coordinates seminars and discussions for dissemination of knowledge and results of research in order to develop new diagnosis or treatment.
7. Develops new proposals for research and obtain support for new and/or continuing research activities.
8. Makes decisions and recommendations that have a major impact on scientific research activities.
9. May supervise graduate/ medical students and trainees.
10. Performs other related duties.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities in Relation to the NASA Space Radiation and Translational Research Institute for Space Research Programs.
NASA Space Radiation work - Participation in space radiation experiments at NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) located in Brookhaven National Laboratories (BNL), Long Island, NY. This will include – preparation of animals to be transported to BNL, travel and stay at BNL for 4-7 days at least 2 times a year. Perform radiation experiments, at NSRL, and work at the Biology Department at BNL with samples of cells and animal tissue post-irradiation. Tissue collection, embedding into OCT preservative, or fixation in various fixatives. Morphometry with Light and Fluorescent microscopy.
Translational Research Institute for Space Research work – Conducting a retrospective and prospective data mining studies to evaluate the potential impact of the spaceflight environment on the regulation of molecular pathways mediating cellular stress responses in astronauts plasma-derived exosomal miRNA contents and other small RNA species and whether these modifications can be used as preclinical prognostic biomarkers for health and disease. Collecting new data using stored samples (generating new OMICS data using non-coding miRNA derived from plasma exosomes of astronauts that flew Shuttle missions). Isolation of exosomes from plasma, total RNA isolation, processing for RNAseq and protein profiling, working with bio- informatics units on data analyses, data presentation manuscript preparation.
- Doctorate degree (MD or PhD) in sciences or related field
Minimum three years of experience with scientific investigation.
Must have demonstrated outstanding achievement in a field of research
Must have contributed to a number of peer-reviewed publications at least some of which have had a major impact on advancing the field or discipline.
