Research Conflicts of Interest Office Mission:

Industry-academia relationships represent enormous opportunities but also present unique challenges.  At Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (“ISMMS”), academia-industry relationships and management of potential conflicts of interest (“COI”) are guided by rigorous adherence to the principles of transparency and accountability which are intended to safeguard our core missions – the learning environment of our trainees, the scientific integrity of our research, and the clinical care or our patients.  The expanded COI office will support successful academia-industry collaborations through development and implementation of policies, processes, and oversight plans that safeguard Mount Sinai research, education and clinical care.

 
Roles & Responsibilities:

Working closely with Dean for Industry Engagement & Conflicts of Interest, the Senior Director will focus on conflicts of interest in research (“COIR”.) The selected candidate will have strong research training & experience that will be used to conduct “hands on” scientific assessments of grants awarded by The National Institutes of Health and other sources.  The candidate will apply this research knowledge to determine the potential for financial conflicts of interest and to create meaningful management plans that will protect the design, conduct and reporting of research. He/she will interact frequently with faculty and administrative leaders, generate appropriate management plans, communicate with Federal agencies, provide faculty education and guidance, and play a key role in ISMMS policy and process development. Specific duties are outlined below.

  • Accept responsibility for all the review of all Federally awarded grants for outside financial interests of investigators, assessing the scientific relatedness to proposed research and developing complex management plans
  • Interact frequently with investigators to reach common understanding of the scientific nature or each research project and the relevance of the particular financial interests to those projects
  • Develop expertise regarding faculty collaborations with industry (collaborative, sponsored research, consulting, start-up companies, etc.)
  • Develop and apply expertise on relevant Federal and other regulatory requirements related to conflicts of interest management in research
  • Serve a key liaison to the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) for conflict management reporting on Federally-funded research projects
  • Assist in the re-organization of the COI office including review of all policies and processes
  • Collaborate closely with the Information Technology team to develop electronic platforms and tools to improve collection, tracking and analysis of extensive information reviewed/cataloged by the COI office
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders within the institution e.g. Program for the Protection of Human Subjects, Grants and Contracts Office, Research Compliance and Technology Transfer
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and FOCI network
  • Perform continuous quality monitoring to ensure ongoing best practices as compared to other leading schools of medicine
  • Provide support to the ISMMS Financial Conflicts of Interest in Research (“FCOIR”) working groups and full committee
  • Continuously evaluate COIR processes in order to streamline and maximize efficiencies
  • Collaborate with the Dean to develop, implement and update educational tools related to FCOIR
  • Collaborate with the Dean to develop and implement long-term strategies to identify, manage, monitor and mitigate risk
Requirements:
  • Strong knowledge of science with a minimum of a Master’s degree in a scientific discipline; Ph.D. in a scientific discipline is preferred
  • Extensive experience with federally funded research programs and grant application process
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Experience with research administration or research compliance with an academic medical center is highly desirable
  • Proficiency in data collection, review and analysis
  • Proficiency in database usage, Excel, Word and Power Point essential
  • Leadership, supervisory and mentoring experience a plus
