Roles & Responsibilities:

We are a young and dynamic research group focused on functional genomics and genetics in the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment in the Departments of Psychiatry and Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. We are seeking an ambitious, creative, and motivated Bioinformatician I with expertise in computational biology, bioinformatics, genetics and/or genome data analysis. The individual will support several research projects by applying bioinformatics expertise to high-throughput omic data. The ideal candidate will have strong statistical and programming proficiencies with proven expertise in transcriptome data analysis, including RNA-sequencing and singlecell RNA-sequencing data.

 

The Seaver Center is a fully integrated translational research center dedicated to discovering the biological causes of autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders and developing breakthrough treatments. Our mission is to bridge the gap between new discoveries at the basic science level and clinical care by developing new and improved approaches to autism diagnosis and treatment. Our interdisciplinary patient-based research team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, a developmental pediatrician, neurologist, clinical geneticist, and trainees in medicine and psychology. The Seaver Autism Center is committed to serving individuals of all levels of functioning and takes a unique genetics-first approach to autism and neurodevelopmental research.

 

The Bioinformatician I will have the following duties/responsibilities:

  • Computational investigation of large-scale RNA-sequencing and single-cell RNA-sequencing data
  • Develop projects and work independently on a variety of bioinformatics analysis projects
  • Establishing systems-biology methods and pipelines to integrate multi-modal genomic data
  • Develop computational methods that integrate large-scale PheWAS resources
  • Uses software to gather, store, manipulate and analyzes research data
  • Will play a major role within a large/diverse team of scientists by performing integrative genomic analyses of rare genetic variation, epigenetics, and gene expression to study autism
  • Writes custom scripts for analysis of genomic data derived from high-throughput techniques
  • Designs and implements bioinformatics tools and processes in order to analyze large scale datasets
  • Identifies and resolves technical issues and proposes upgrades to current software
  • Develops Rshiny applications to host data for a number of independent projects.

  • Manages databases, conducts statistical and genomic analysis, and participates in the preparation of manuscripts and presentations
  • May collaborate with wet-bench biologists and work independently to experimentally validate data derived from computational studies
  • May give presentations both inside and outside of the institution
 
 
Requirements:
  • Academic degree in quantitative sciences (e.g. computer science, statistics), computational biology/bioinformatics, or biological sciences with a strong proven track record of programming
  • Strong interest in human genetics, genomics and disease. Publication record would be a bonus
  • General Skills:
    • Strong understanding of biostatistics, bioinformatics and clinical research
    • Excellent knowledge of R and other programming scripting language
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to multitask, set priorities and meet time tables while managing several simultaneous projects
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required
    • 3 years experience required
    • Working experience with genetics or statistics analysis software and online resources. Experience in programming environments such as Matlab, R statistical package, BioConductor, Perl or C++
