Working without supervisors present, provides reference and other library services to evening and weekend users of the Elmhurst Hospital Center Medical Library. Ensures proper security and assumes responsibility for the Library, library materials and library users during assigned hours in the absence of the full-time staff librarians. Processes incoming library materials (books, journals, periodicals); updates and maintains catalog; completes order for library materials. Performs related clerical tasks necessary for efficient and secure off-hours library operation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Without direct supervision, ensures proper security for the Library and library materials and is responsible for library operations during evenings and weekend hours (e.g. opens/closes the Library, turns off all lights and equipment, contracts Hospital Police for assistance in case of problems, etc.).
-Provides reference assistance to patrons during evening and weekend hours. Assists library users in location and use of library materials, files, etc.
-Instructs library users in the operation of computer, audiovisual, and other equipment.
-Performs circulation desk activities (e.g. checks library materials in/out, examines condition of materials returned, compiles daily statistics for user traffic and circulation of materials, backs up computer files, enters patron records into circulation system, etc.)
-Maintains order of materials in the Library (e.g. shelves books and journals used by patrons and maintains the order of volumes on shelves, checks condition of volumes, etc.) Rearranges tables, chairs, etc. into proper order.
-Processes new library materials (e.g. alphabetizes publication information by author/publisher and checks it against the catalog to avoid duplicate orders, types the order requisitions, etc.)
-Processes new books and audiovisual materials (e.g. stamps new books with ownership, makes and affixes spine and card catalog labels, attaches book pockets)
-Photocopies/prints library materials from bound and online journals as requested by library users or as assigned by supervisors.
-Locates materials for users as requested. Answers telephone inquiries.
-Collects money for personal photocopies and books sales and appropriately enters these transactions in record book. Counts money at the end of shift.
-Sunday employees will purchase the Sunday New York Times and be reimbursed during their shift.
-Work requires a level of knowledge usually obtained through completion of a high school education. Some college is desirable.
-Candidate for job must have good knowledge of English language and be able to follow detailed written instructions.
-Knowledge of medical terminology desirable.
-Some work experience desirable.
-Basic computer and word processing skills required.
-Basic knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
-Work requires personal skills allowing effective contact with professionals using library services (physicians, nurses, allied health professionals).
