Job Title:  Point of Care Testing Specialist - (MSH)

Roles & Responsibilities:

Under general supervision of the POCT Coordinator and/or POCT manager and Director of POCT and according to established policies and procedures, assists in the training of point of care testing personnel in the hospital units and ancillary sites to ensure accurate and correct patient results. The POCT specialist validates POCT devices for use and performs maintenance of point of care equipment and troubleshoots instruments not functioning according to specifications.

Reviews daily QC records of all Point of Care testing sites. Reviews documentation by operators of remedial action taken for out-of-range QC.


Reviews daily and monthly instrument maintenance documentation for POCT  instrumentation. Notifies the POCT coordinator of operator initiated remedial actions and follows-up for all point of care tests and instruments.


Performs linearities, correlations and validations as necessary. Working knowledge of EP Evaluator or similar statistical program.

Prepares statistical charts for review by the POCT coordinator.

Distributes POCT supplies to testing sites and maintains inventory.

Maintains supplies, equipment and work area.
Monitors inventory levels.

Monitors compliance of all units and operators with all regulatory requirements.


Assists in training, competency assessments and in-service refresher training of POCT

operators and Nurse Educators.

Working knowledge of all regulatory requirements regarding POCT including licensure.


Assist new locations in setting up point of care testing.


Performs other duties as assigned by the POCT Coordinator, POCT Manager, and the Director of POCT.


Licensure: NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License is preferred when hired but expected by 2 years of employment.

Required Education:  Bachelor of Science or Arts, preferably in Laboratory Medicine, Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology or related field.
Minimum Related Experience:  In addition to a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Biology, an internship or 1 yr experience in a clinical lab or point of care testing setting is preferred.
Preferred Related Experience:  Lab experience directly in a Point of Care Testing setting.
