Job Description


  • Assists Anesthesia Professional Staff
  • Assists licensed anesthesia providers in preparation and draping of patient for invasive monitoring procedures.
  • Anticipates and assists needs of licensed anesthesia providers during invasive monitor insertion and procedures such as pulmonary artery catheter, central venous access, regional anesthesia, fiberoptic intubation and is knowledgeable of the American Society of Anesthesiologists difficult airway algorithm.
  • Proactively plans needs for invasive monitoring by reviewing daily operating room schedule.
  • Aids in preparation of patients for major invasive monitoring and/ or complex cases including but not limited to placement of blood pressure cuff, electrocardiography leads, pulse oximeter, positioning and prepping.
  • Sets up operating room for cases according to licensing restrictions which may include the following: preparation of laryngoscope and intubation equipment, intravenous solution and tubing set-up and set up of intravenous warming devices.
  • Upon successful completion of electrocardiogram course monitors electrocardiogram for dysrhythmias.
  • Assists licensed anesthesia providers with volume infusions as directed during intra-operative volume resuscitations.
  • Maintains the availability of necessary equipment in each operating room.

II.    Description of Competencies                                                                                  

Job Summary: Team Leader for Anesthesia Technicians and Technologist. Knowledgeable of The Joint Commission and all Regulatory accreditation policies and procedures directly related to anesthesia and patient safety. Demonstrates competence and timeliness in all duties, particularly in preparation for emergencies and trauma procedures. Provides technical support to the licensed professional anesthesia staff for delivery of patient care. Plans all education, preparation and competency of staff. Role models service excellence and core behaviors. Accepts and demonstrates behaviors of high functioning, critical thinking team member.

A. Assists Anesthesia Professional Staff

1.    Assists licensed anesthesia providers in preparation and draping of patient for invasive monitoring procedures.

B. Equipment Management

1.    Maintains the availability of necessary equipment in each operating   room.

2.    Prepares and assembles transducer lines and equipment necessary for invasive pressure monitoring as requested. Has a working knowledge of hemodynamic and can perform cardiac calculations.

3.    Demonstrates detailed technical knowledge and troubleshooting ability for anesthesia delivery system, scavenger system, gas analyzer, electrocardiogram pulse oximeter and rapid infusion devices.

4.    Makes available, assembles, and assists with operation of specialized equipment such as humidification units; fiberoptic endoscopic equipment; rapid infusion devices/blood warmers; patient warming devices; neuromuscular devices; infusion pumps and syringes; balloon pump initial setups and transthoracic echocardiogram setup.

5.    Inventories, orders and maintains departmental supply stock consistent with departmental demand. Cognizant of supply location and is able to obtain or stock them accordingly.

6.    Maintains material safety data sheets (MSDS) on hazardous materials and latex allergy items for all supplies under anesthesia cognizance.

7.    Maintains an inventory of anesthesia equipment to track repairs; loaners and demos. Conducts quality controls to return such items after repair to service. Aids in the preparation of the capital budget for the department of anesthesia.

8.    Maintains records of or has access to all preventative maintenance records.

C. Pharmacy/Labs

1.    Monitors pharmacy drugs for expiration date and properly disposes of used drugs.

2.    Fulfills the College of American Pathologists requirements for quality controls including detailed documentation.

3.    Participates dependably in call coverage for the provision of intra-operative autotransfusion services.

4.    Prepares and assembles software and operates the auto transfusion equipment consistent with department policy and procedural guidelines.

5.    Maintains cleanliness and preparation of auto transfusion equipment and supplies.

6.    Maintains complete and accurate patient records for all procedures during which intra-operative auto transfusion is utilized including estimated blood loss and volume reinfused.

7.    Assists with monitoring and evaluation of auto transfusion service quality and effectiveness.

8.    Performs all quality controls and authorized user list for Point of Care testing devices.

D. Quality & Performance Improvement 

1.    Participates in a system to support and continually improve the quality of anesthesia services provided to patients and their families, fellow employees, physicians and other customers.

2.    Participates in departmental Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement activities.

3.    Participates in the development and continuous updating of departmental policies and procedures directly related to anesthesia technical staff and performance duties.

IV. Education Required

A graduate of an ASATT two-year approved program                                                       with completion of required clinical component                                                                                                                             BLS, ACLS, within one year of employment

AT least two years medical experience

 

 

 

 

VI.   Licenses/Certifications Required                                                                    

 Certified Anesthesia Technologist (CER.A.T.T.) or

 Certified Anesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T.)

 

VII. Job Hazards/Physical Demands

Must be able to follow instructions and lift/ pushes/ pulls/ carries/ cleans and move equipment used by anesthesiologist in the operating room suites. Must be able to perform physically challenging job without restrictions which would impede completion of the task. There may be exposure to blood and hazardous materials and equipment that required protective gear which is supplied by the institution.
