Roles & Responsibilities: 

Directing clinical operations to insure an optimal environment for patient and family focused care and fiscally prudent clinical operations consistent with the mission of the hospital and the nursing professional practice model.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1.

Clinical Leadership:

 

a.

Develops, implements, and maintains professional and hospital standards to   support outcomes-based care and evidence-based nursing practice.

 

b.

Insure that the overall patient management program supports  patient, unit  and clinical service objectives, patient management, and excellence in the delivery of patient care services.

 

c.

Develops, implements and oversees a unit-based quality initiatives & performance improvement program  that promotes both clinical service and financial excellence.

 

d.

Provides operational and clinical oversite to nursing staff to insure that all day to day activity supports clinical excellence and patient and staff satisfaction.

 

e.

Works closely with leadership throughout the Service, Nursing Department and other hospital departments to insure that the  highest expectations of all regulatory and professional standards are met.

 

f.

Demonstrates integral involvement in the Nursing Department PI/QA program. Participates in monthly Nursing Department meetings.

 

g.

Facilitates daily Interdisciplinary Rounds to ensure compliance with the patient management plan and the appropriate length of stay for each patient.

 

h.

Conducts daily rounds with patients and staff on the unit/service.

 

i.

Maintains, reviews and updates all specialty policies in accordance with hospital, professional and regulatory  standards.

 

j.

Supports the overall strategic goals and service standards of the Hospital and the Nursing Department.

 

k.

Creates and maintains an environment of care where patients, families, staff and others are treated with respect, dignity and in a professional manner, promoting an environment respectful of cultural diversity.

 

l.

Assesses patient care needs and monitors patient satisfaction. Addresses and resolves patient complaints in timely manner.

 

m.

Identifies, responds to and investigates potential and actual risk management issues.

 

n.

Coordinates a safe discharge process for all patients including follow up with discharge phone calls.

 

o.

Participates in value base analysis process to review products for quality and cost reduction/containment.

 

 

2.

Administration

 

a.

Coordinates patient care delivery. Maintains environmental safety. Maintains orderly flow of admissions and discharges. Coordinates activities and interacts effectively with other departments and medical staff to manage the patient care environment. 

 

b.

Manages unit / service staffing to insure a safe, appropriate staffing plan for all personnel.

 

c.

Conducts unit/service Nursing staff meetings monthly or more frequently as needed and communicates discussion via minutes to staff.

 

d.

Supports the clinical leadership in the development of interdisciplinary and nursing standards relevant to the scope of practice. Provides unit/service environment that encourages a team culture and response to the provision of patient care services.

 

e.

Encourages and facilitates professional growth and development of staff. Facilitates flow of information from other departments to staff.

 

f.

Promotes a positive environment that encourages staff to participate in the identification of areas of opportunity for improvement in patient care and all related processes.

 

g.

Participates in pilot studies of new products and research projects.

3.

Management of Human Resources and Staff Development

 

a.

Insures that personnel issues are managed in compliance with contractual agreements and supports positive employee-management relationships. Completes HRTS management transactions in a timely  manner.

 

b.

Collaborates with other nursing and hospital leaders to promote professional development of nursing staff.

 

c.

Evaluates staff performance on an ongoing basis and completes staff performance appraisals in a timely manner. Provides recognition of exemplary employee performance and also provides employee counseling / progressive discipline as necessary

 

d.

Insures all personnel are appropriately credentialed, competent and complete ongoing educational programs as required.

 

e.

Insures that staff are afforded opportunities for professional growth and development that support both new and existing programs of care.

 

f.

Collaborates with the Nursing Education staff in identifying and prioritizing educational needs of the nursing department staff.

 

g.

Works closely with the Nursing Assistant Administrators to insure the continuation of integrated services in support of overall program objectives on evening and night shifts and weekends/holidays.

 

h.

Supports nursing education and preceptorships, providing an optimal learning   environment for nursing staff and affiliated students.

4.

Fiscal Management

 

a.

Participates in the development of the unit/service salary and operational budget and capital budget.  Monitors use of unit supplies and equipment.

 

b.

Monitors salary and operational budget and prepares monthly budget justifications.  Reviews non-productive/benefit time for each employee.

5.

Professional Development:

 

a.

Membership in nursing and health related professional organizations.

 

b.

Participates in hospital committees and other forums, advancing both

professional nursing practice and the patient unit / services.

 

c.

Remains current in legislative, ethical, regulatory and clinical practice issues.

 

d.

Attends continuing education forums and obtains CEUs in Nursing or health-related topics.

 

e.

Encourages scholarship and research within the development of evidence-based nursing practice, promoting a spirit of inquiry among nursing staff.

 Requirements: 

 

Licensure: Current  NYS license as a registered professional nurse

Education:  BSN, Master’s Degree in Nursing or health related field.

Maintain current BCLS

Computer skills – Microsoft Office

Minimum of three years of progressive nursing leadership experience demonstrating solid management abilities.

Excellent interpersonal and team building skills

Consistently demonstrates an ability to carry out all responsibilities/duties in a thorough and timely matter.
