Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Clinical/Technical/Service

1.     Provides nutrition services as an integral component of health care primarily in the out-patient nutrition clinic to include developing and implementing a nutritional care plan and providing individual or group instructions

2.     Assesses nutritional status including biochemical and clinical measures as well as nutrient and energy requirements

3.     Develops nutrition care plans and counsels patient and involves other concerned persons in the nutrition principles of the prescribed diet, adapting the diet plan to the individual’s lifestyle

4.     Documents care plan and progress in medical record as well as recommending appropriate follow-up

5.     Conducts nutrition classes to patients and evaluates effectiveness

6.     Plans for alternate methods and/or systems for nutrition education (programmed, audio-visual) when appropriate

7.     Develops and utilizes educational materials for use in teaching

8.     Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

Age Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric)

a. Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group

b.Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment.

c. Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

d.Uses communication techniques which are age appropriate

B. Organizational/Managerial

9.     Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities

10.  Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information

11.  Assists in planning, developing and implementing OPN Clinic programs, classes and related educational materials

12.  Maintains effective written records for required daily and monthly statistics

C. Educational/Professional Development

13.  Participates in the development of other staff members

14.  Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements

15.  Identifies learning strengths and needs

16.  Utilizes learning resources

17.  Participates in training and evaluation of dietetic interns

18.  Successfully completes physical exam every 12 months

D. Communication/Relationships

19.  Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others

20.  Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community

21.  Adheres to Continuum’s legal and ethical standards

22.  May be required to perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree

EXPERIENCES AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED

One year experience in hospital therapeutics.  Bi-Lingual preferred.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Registered Dietitian.
