Clinical Pastoral Education Resident
Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Care and Education/ CPE Supervisor at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, The Chaplain Resident is responsible for responding to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff of all faith traditions throughout the organization. The Chaplain Resident provides interfaith spiritual care through visitation, crisis intervention, prayers, sacraments as needed and appropriate, bereavement and end-of-life support, life-reviews, spiritual care consultation around existential questions, assists with faith issues in the healing process, spiritual and religious rituals, worship services and staff support. The Chaplain Resident functions as a team member of the Department of Spiritual Care and Education at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and throughout the Mount Sinai Health System and establishes collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary care team, other professionals and the community. The Chaplain Resident is responsible for participating in the professional training program such as the action-reflection-new action process, written requirements and group participation to complete the educational requirements for chaplaincy certification.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assess patient and family spiritual needs and assists families in using their faith in dealing with illness, trauma, and stress; visits newly admitted patients and patients with special requests in assigned area; visits critical care waiting areas each day; follows up with patients from previous visits when appropriate. Provides crisis intervention as necessary; assists in helping families remain informed of patient’s condition.
2. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment and communicate effectively with all age groups of patients served by the Spiritual Care and Education Department.
3. Assists families to use their faith system in coping with death; provides support to the family as appropriate when they view body; assists family in completing all necessary paperwork. Supports staff in dealing with their emotion in loss of a loved one.
4. Participates in the overnight On-Call rotation.
5. Maintains a working relationship between the Department of Spiritual Care and Education and medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments.
6. Participates in interdisciplinary meetings in her/his patient care areas. If appropriate the chaplain resident may initiate such meetings in collaboration with CPE Supervisor or Department Manager.
7. Participates in the leadership of Interfaith or faith specific worship and memorial services and offer special services in patient care areas and Chapel.
8. Fulfills all documentation requirements such as appropriate charting in the electronic medical chart and the on – call log.
9. Participates actively in the Clinical Pastoral Education program and pursues completion of the formal requirements to enter the Chaplaincy Certification process.
10. Attends selected local and regional professional meetings.
11. Performs other related duties and activities as may be requested by CPE Supervisor or Department Manager.
12. Adheres to all departmental and hospital safety standards
13. Attends all mandatory in-services.
14. Participates in maintenance of proper administration procedures for department in accordance with institutional policies.
15. Participates in the department’s plan for continuous quality improvement.

2. The ability to listen actively and convey calming, accepting, mindful presence and focus on the needs of patients, families and staff.
2. The analytical ability to assess patients’ spiritual needs and sense of well-being and find appropriate and compassionate responses to patient issues and concerns.
3. An empathy for the problems experienced by patients and families; commitment to help the
Bachelor’s Degree. Masters preferred. Major focus in theology or related fields preferred.
One unit CPE at an ACPE accredited center
Affiliation with recognized religious or spiritual group
Ordination, or the equivalent from a faith community or commission to function in ministry by appropriate religious authority
Minimum Related Experience
Must have successfully completed at least one unit of CPE at an ACPE-accredited center.

Capable of using computers; familiar with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
Excellent written and oral communication.
