Job Title: Lead Clinical Laboratory Technologist


Roles & Responsibilities:

A. Clinical/Technical/Service

1.    Assists the Supervisor in the operation of the laboratory and ensure reliable test results for maximum efficient patient care

2.    Provides leadership for technicians and technologists in the performance of their job duties

3.    Aids in monitoring the standards of accuracy, precision, and efficiency in the performance of tests and the operation of equipment in the laboratory

4.    Reviews lab results and corrects errors or problems after review with technologists

5.    Assists in monitoring preventative maintenance programs for all instruments and equipment

6.    Assists in monitoring Quality Control and implements corrective action when indicated

7.    Monitors compliance with safety procedures

8.    Assists in maintaining appropriate levels of supplies and reagents

9.    Assists in the evaluation of new instrumentation in the laboratory

10. Assists in bench work, if necessary

11. Assists physicians in obtaining bone marrow smears, accessioning samples and doing cytotechnical stains

12. Routinely works rotating weekends

13. Prepares and performs testing on proficiency surveys as required by supervisor

14. Transports specimens and performs analysis in other St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Laboratory if required

15. Performs all functions of Technologist II

16. Remains familiar with and enforces laboratory safety practices

17. Meets criteria for competency assessment in all areas

18. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

Age Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric)

a.    Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group

b.    Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

c.    Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

d.    Uses communication techniques which are age appropriate

B. Organizational/Managerial

19. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities

20. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information

21. Provides coverage and effective utilization of personnel

22. Resolves technical problems referred by technologists or other health care personnel; aids in making decisions to obtain external assistance if necessary; refers administrative problems to Supervisor or Manager

23. Performs in the absence of the Supervisor all duties except disciplinary actions

24. Reports to the Supervisor or Manager any situations that may need disciplinary action

C. Educational/Professional Development

25. Participates in the development of other staff members

26. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements

27. Identifies learning strengths and needs

28. Utilizes learning resources.

29. Maintains continued compliance with the policies, procedures, and recordkeeping necessary to meeting the standards of accrediting or regulatory agencies

30. Participates in continuing education

31. Assists with the orientation and continuing education programs for personnel, students, and pathology residents

D. Communication/Relationships

32. Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others

33. Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community

34. Answers telephones appropriately

35. Maintains good communication with all areas of PATHOLOGY

36. In the absence of a supervisor answers or take information on queries or complaints from medical and hospital staff. Directs all queries/complaints to another supervisor or manager

37. Adheres to Continuum’s legal and ethical standards

38. May be required to perform other duties as assigned



·         Bachelor’s Degree required

·         At least 5 years’ experience required

·         NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License required
