Roles & Responsibilities:
    1. Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service
    2. Provides in-services to BIMC staff, area parents in PTA meetings, and in classrooms to area public school students about AIP and Clinics about AIR/CAIR
    3. Provides music therapy interns with clinical supervision and opportunities for observing and administering AIP protocol, and AIR/CAIR, ICU practices
    4. Provide interns with opportunities to observe environmental music therapy at MSUSD Pediatric and Family/Neuro Practices
    5. Provides music therapy/AIP/AIR/CAIR protocol on outreach basis in area public schools and Ys, NORCS
    6. Arranges musical experiences to enhance the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of patients
    7. Observes patients’ measurements as related to body mass index
    8. Explains the AIP, AIR/CAIR efficiently and effectively to prospective families to gain interest to enroll
    9. Determines the kind of music that is appropriate to relieve anxiety and pain during asthma exacerbation
    10. Provides imagery / wind playing activities for asthmatic and COPD & Cardiac patients, enhancing breath capacity, (improving peak flow measurements)
    11. Explains expectations and follow through for remainder of study to current patients
    12. Maintains records, collects and enters data for on-going music therapy and asthma study
    13. Provides music therapy for relaxation and breathing control as related to pediatric asthma to COPD/CAIR patients assigned to treatment groups
    14. Provides relaxation sessions enabling children & adults comfort and safety
    15. Maintains and calibrates spirometer for pulmonary function tests (PFT) for children and teens with asthma

     

    1. Administers spirometry exam to children and teens with asthma, as per training from spiromter manufacturer, music therapy team, and MS pulmonologists

     

    1. Administers the Pediatric Caregivers Quality of Life Questionnaire and Asthma Severity Questionnaire to pediatric patients, patients’ caregivers according to procedures

     

    1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to

    the age of the patients served in assigned area

     

    19.   Provides periodic music groups of improvisation, singing, and wind playing for patients assigned to the treatment group

    20.   Tracks, updates and submits the renewal of IRB-updating cases and forms for approval

    AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

    1.       Identifies physical, behavioral, and emotional characteristics typical for the age group

    2.       Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

    3.       Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

    4.       Uses communication techniques which are age appropriate

    Organizational/Managerial

    1.       Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities

    2.       Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information

    3.       Returns prospective patient phone calls within 24 hours

    4.       Demonstrates positive outcomes of music therapy interventions with asthma and COPD

    5.       Participates in grant writing

    Education/Professional Development

    1.       Participates in the development of other staff members

    2.       Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements

    3.       Identifies learning strengths and needs

    4.       Utilizes learning resources

    5.       Assists in organizing and provides periodic seminars for music therapy interns on asthma assessment, AIP protocol, music meditation, and the use of orchestral instruments in music therapy

    6.        Attends music therapy, asthma, and other related field conferences

    7.       Presents at music therapy, asthma and other related field conferences

    8.       Attends weekly hour-long supervision sessions with supervisor

    Communication/Relationships

    1.       Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others

    2.       Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community

    3.       Demonstrates commitment to effective and supportive communication and relationships in the music therapy team/department

    4.       May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary


 


 

Requirements:
  • The music therapist should hold a Masters in Music Therapy or Creative Arts Therapy
    1. The music therapist must be Board Certified (MT-BC), and maintain certification in compliance with CBMT; hold New York State Licensure for Creative Arts Therapists (LCAT), or show proof of LCAT Permit application leading to full licensure by December 2019.

    EXPERIENCES AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED

        The music therapist should have three or more years of experience preferably in a medical setting with children.  She/he should have experience in the supervision of interns and/or field work students
