Job Title: Specialty Laboratory Technologist

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

Perform technical and clerical functions and duties necessary for achieving the department’s objective. The Blood Bank’s objective is to serve optimally as a provider of blood products and/or diagnostic test results necessary in support of the practice of Transfusion Medicine.

 

·         Pre-Transfusion Testing

o   Verification of patient name, medical records number, and date of birth on specimen and test request slip

o   ABO and Rh typing

o   Antibody Screening

o   Daily quality control of reagents

o   Resolution of blood grouping discrepancies

·         Perform compatibility testing in accordance with current approved procedures

o   Antigen negative blood screening

o   Autologous and directed blood management

·         Perform special blood bank procedures

o   Antibody identification elution, absorptions, neutralization

o   Antibody titration and plasma/serum aliquots retention

o   Zygosity testing and phenotyping

o   Direct Antigobulin Test Profile (DAT)

o   Fetal Screen

o   Kleihauer-Betke Tests

o   Determine Rh immune globulin candidates and dispense RhIG accordingly

o   Transfusion Reaction work-up

o   Cord Blood Testing - ABO & Rh testing and DAT

·         Prepare blood for Organ Transplantation, Surgical Cases, Inpatient, and Outpatient transfusions

·         Perform procedures necessary to separate and preserve the various components of whole blood

·         Logging in all blood components in the computer according to SOP

·         Preparation of special products and component modification

o   Washed blood

o   Whole blood reconstitution

o   Blood for intrauterine transfusion

o   Aliquots of blood for pediatric use

o   Irradiation of blood and blood products

o   Pool products when indicated

o   Component validation and label verification

·         Assist the supervisor in the quality control of:

o   Reagents

o   Equipment (heating blocks, centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.)

o   Prepared Blood Components

·         Donor Processing

o   ABO and Rh typing

o   Antibody Screening

o   Entering the serology testing results from outside reference laboratory in the computer

o   ABO antibody titers of non-type specific apheresis donors

o   Labeling all components in accordance to the requirements set by the current Good Manufacturing Practices.

·         Participates in continuing education. Attends at least four continuing education sessions a year. 

·         Excellent in oral and written communication since there is a daily communication with external public like doctors, nurses, medical secretaries, etc.

·         Ability to solve problems involving specimens; Patience and finesse in the telephone

·         Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients and their families 

·         Promotes team approach and clear communication for problem resolution in a timely manner.

·         Communicates suggestions/ new ideas for improving work performance/ operations.

·         Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the laboratory, hospital staff and extended community.

 

Requirements:

·         B.S. in Medical Technology required

·         NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License required

·         ASCP preferred or NCA certification

·         At least 1 year of experience
