Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Technologist 

 
Roles & Responsibilities:

To assure that the Employee is technically competent, possesses required education and experience as well as other behavioral skills and performs his/her responsibilities accordingly. To demonstrate that the employee’s performance is evaluated and appropriate training - inservice is provided.  To assure that the employee is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital Center.


Clinical/Technical/Service 


Analyzes patient specimens, utilizing automated and manual procedures as defined in the laboratory standard operating procedure manuals.

Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks. 

Performs periodic/scheduled and as needed maintenance on instrumentation/equipment.

Maintains documentation including remedial action for problems encountered.

Performs quality control and calibration procedures when indicated; verifies in

laboratory information system; records on Levy-Jennings charts; signs QC logs.

Ensures that all required Quality control and /or calibration procedures are completed by signing out the records appropriately - per shift/daily / monthly etc. a) all QC are logged in the LIS and indicated on the LJ charts when needed. b) signs all QC logs.

Maintains all records as per the regulatory requirements: card files, patient requisitions, LIS documentation, statistical data.

Consults with the manager or lead tech, if needed, on all important results, conflicting or out of range (recognized patterns specified in policy) results. Notes inadequate volume and /or abnormal appearance of sample.

Reviews all Critical test results by repeat analysis if necessary, and communicates the same to Nursing staff/physician every time. Manager/Lead Tech is always notified in extreme cases. Enters the details of critical value communication in LIS.

Prioritizes work activities to meet the established/expected test result turn around time. Always notifies manager/lead tech if cannot perform a test or if it is delayed. 

Assists in inventory control to assure adequate supplies (QC, reagents, calibs, and other consumables) are available and reagents are stored properly (temperature sensitive). Supplies are dated appropriately when put in use.

Performs accurate analyses on all survey materials and proficiency testing when requested.

Participates in other projects/duties as assigned by the lab manager. 

Takes initiative in resolving instrument related problems and finding alternate options for test processing.
Uses available time to departmental advantage and assists where needed.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary.
Assists in preparation for regulatory inspections.
Performs phlebotomy on a daily basis.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

Age Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric)

a. Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group.

b. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

c. Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

d. Uses communication technique which are age appropriate


Organizational/Managerial


Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities.

Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.

Observes the Health Care System’s compliance policies.

Is cognizant of and complies with laboratory policies.

Complies with all regulatory policies.

Participates in Competency & Proficiency testing programs, reports results

back to the lab manager.

Observes all safety procedures & precautions: a) uses personal protective

equipment such as lab coat, gloves, mask, shield etc. b) disposes of

contaminated waste and samples as specified by the hospital and laboratory

manual.

Wears hospital ID badge at all times while on premises.

Requirements:

EDUCATION REQUIRED

Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Medical Technology. Must meet educational requirements as set forth by the  New York State Department of Education for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

EXPERIENCES AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED

Two to six years' experience, based on educational background. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required. Able to work in a fast-paced, multi-task environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. 

Experience performing phlebotomy. Will be required to perform phlebotomy.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.

JOB HAZARDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Works with infectious material/specimens, hazardous materials, chemical reagents, electrical and mechanical equipment/instruments.  Must observe universal precautions.
