Roles & Responsibilities:
Manages the administrative and technical functions of the laboratory section, ensuring quality testing, cost effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital Center. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks
  • Establishes and monitors compliance with all standard operating policies and procedures, consistent with quality and service requirements.
  • Responsible for the direction of all clinical, technical, and administrative functions of the section.
  • Trains, monitors and assesses competency and performance of staff, to ensure high quality and timely reporting of patient information. 
  • Orders and maintains appropriate levels of supplies and equipment. Monitors spending, and makes recommendations for cost containment.
  • Reviews, develops and implements new testing protocols and methodologies, consistent with departmental goals.
  • Monitors quality control and quality improvement activities.
  • Ensures that all communications between section and its clients are handled professionally, courteously and efficiently.
  • Approves schedules and payroll for section.
  • Maintains a clean, safe laboratory environment.
  • Monitors Human Resource communications pertaining to vacancies, transfers, new hires, resignations, and disciplinary procedures.
  • Recommends on purchase of new equipment and implementation of new procedures.
  • Enforces laboratory safety practices.
  • Attends departmental Quality Improvement committee meetings, and prepares reports as needed.
  • Prepares and reviews lab manuals, updates policies and procedures as needed.
  • Oversees proficiency testing for accurate performance and timely response.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.
  • Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information
  • Observes the Health Care System’s compliance policies
  • Interviews prospective employees.
  • Completes performance evaluations on section staff.
  • Prepares lectures and training sessions for department staff and residents.
  • Enforces hospital regulations and takes disciplinary action as needed.
  • Maintains record of incidents, statistics and inspections.
  • Attends continuing education conferences, workshops and seminars. Reports back to department on department-sponsored educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others.
  • Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community
  •  Creates a productive and efficient work environment.
  • Encourages positive communication within the department. 
  • Demonstrates a courteous, customer-service oriented manner with clients, visitors and co-workers.
  • Confers with Attending Physicians and House Staff as needed, to ensure accurate and timely reporting of patient information.
  • Responds to complaints and inquiries from clients.
  •  May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary 
  • Bachelor of Science degree required, Masters preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years managerial experience in Clinical Laboratory.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Computer literacy required
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required
