Job Title: Supervisor 

Roles & Responsibilities:


Responsible for the supervision and coordination of the daily technical and clerical work of the core lab section.  Assists  the section manager as needed.  Is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and Hospital Center.

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks:
  • Directly supervises technologists at the bench. Prepares, monitors, and assigns work schedules to maximize productivity. Assists staff as needed.
  • Ensures test results are completely and accurately entered into computer system, issues error correction reports as necessary.
  • Prepares section schedule, and ensures appropriate level of staffing at all times.
  • Monitors pending lists; ensures appropriate turn-around time for patient results.
  • Keeps staff informed about new/revised lab policies & procedures; conducts inservice education as needed.
  • Provides assistance to hospital staff and clients with problems, concerns or questions.
  • Complies with all safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Meets criteria for competency in all areas.
  • Checks performance of instruments and equipment in his/her section periodically making minor adjustments and repairs. Reports instrument malfunction and contacts service personnel as needed. Documents equipment checks and preventative maintenance on all instrumentation. Ensures that all equipment is setup and ready to operate for the shift. Arranges for back-up testing in event of mechanical failure.
  • Reviews daily instruments and methodology quality control and ensures that all controls are within established ranges and are documented. Ensures corrective action have been taken for out of range controls and are appropriately documented.
  • Covers STAT lab operations as required. Oversees testing in STAT lab ensuring that results are completed and verified within the expected TAT. Provides accurate coverage for STAT lab as needed.
  • Assists manager and other supervisors as appropriate.
  • Distributes and oversees performance of proficiency testing.
  • Evaluates employee performance; establishes standards of performance; counsels and recommends disciplinary action when needed.
  • Ensures adherence to standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities, as directed by the section manager.
  • Tracks missing specimens, investigates problems, ensures that all work on shift is completed, informs manager of concerns or delays.
  • Monitors inventory and supplies without overstocking, prepares purchase orders as needed.
  • Maintains good laboratory records by seeing that instrument logs, worksheets and procedure manuals are accurately kept.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.
  • Participates in competency assessment of departmental staff.
  • Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
  • Observes the Health Care System’s compliance policies.
  • Attends all staff and/or management meetings as required.
  • Obtains paperwork for all leaves and submits to manager.
  • Participates in performance reviews of technologists and support staff.
  • Prioritizes work appropriately; oversees daily workflow of section.
  • Provides or oversees training of new employees, and continuing education of staff.
  • Recommends personnel action such as overtime, discipline and retraining needs.
  • Reviews payroll information for section.
  • Assumes responsibility for section in absence of manager.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.
  • Problem solves with minimal intervention of manager.
Educational/Professional Development
  • Participates in the development of other staff members.
  • Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements.
  • Identifies learning strengths and needs
  • Utilizes learning resources.
  • Train new staff on testing methods, laboratory computer and equipment.
  • Assist with manual revisions and updates.
  • Participate in inservice lectures.
  • Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others.
  • Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
  • Creates a productive and efficient work environment.
  • Encourages positive communication within the department.
  • Demonstrates a courteous, customer-service oriented manner with clients, visitors and co-workers.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary.





Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Medical Technology.  Must meet educational requirements as set forth by the New York State Department of Education for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.


Minimum of 6 years experience in addition to the required educational background and licensure requirements.  Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required. Able to work in a fast-paced, multi-task environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
