Job Summary:

The CAM Assessor Technician primarily engages in the assessment of hospitalized geriatric patients for the presence of Delirium or Subsyndromal Delirium.  This includes reviewing daily lists of appropriate patients for delirium screening and ensuring that these patients are assessed and the results recorded in the electronic medical record in a timely manner. 

This individual works with the interdisciplinary Delirium Team, charged with the prevention, assessment, management and treatment of Delirium in geriatric patients across the hospital. The CAM Assessor technician reports to the Associate Director and Medical Director of the Hospital Delirium Program. 

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Works with acutely hospitalized geriatric patients on medical and surgical units.
  • Utilizes the CAM assessment tool in Mount Sinai’s electronic medical record system and appropriately assesses patients prior to beginning patient assessments.
  • Reviews eligibility lists for hospitalized patients to receive CAM assessments every morning and ensure that all appropriate patients on that list are assessed each day.
  • Performs all steps necessary to gather sufficient data to perform the CAM assessment on each eligible patient, including:
  1. Reviews and records pertinent information from the electronic medical record.
  2. Obtains additional information from clinical staff and from patients’ family/caregiver necessary to perform the CAM.
  3. Performs a cognitive assessment and brief mental status examination at the bedside of patients who require the CAM
  • Utilizes all pertinent information obtained to complete the CAM flow sheet in the electronic medical record for each patient assessed.
  • Reports any significant issues which arise during the performance of the CAM Assessor Technician’s duties to either the Medical Director or Associate Medical Director for the hospital delirium program.
  • Provides feedback to the Hospital Delirium Team during interdisciplinary meetings to assist in the improvement and development of this program.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Psychology, Neuroscience, or related fields, or, a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree with pre-medical undergraduate educational track.
  • Strong background in psychology, neuroscience or biological sciences. Experience working with patients in a volunteer or paid position, or subjects participating in research. Strong interest in pursuing a clinical career in psychology, mental health counseling, medicine, nursing or clinical research.
  • Microsoft - intermediate level

General Skills and Competencies  

  • Highly familiar and comfortable with widely available computer programs, and able to learn how to work within an electronic medical records system.
  • Interested in learning about the diagnosis, causes and treatment of delirium in the hospitalized geriatric patient population.
  • Able and willing to work with hospitalized medical and surgical patients and their families and caregivers in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Able and willing to work with medical and nursing staff involved in the care of the patients being evaluated, in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development.
  • Willing to make a two year commitment.
