Hear From Our Veterans

Moving from the military to healthcare was a mix of excitement and nerves as I stepped away from the familiar structure of the service into an entirely new industry. But the skills I picked up in the service, like staying calm under pressure and working as a team, really paid off. It’s been incredibly rewarding to use those strengths in a job I truly love. Today, I am grateful for the journey, as it has led me to a profession where I can continue to serve with purpose and passion.

I started as an Intern at Mount Sinai in 2016 while I was finishing college on the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Since then I have used my past experiences and experience as a veteran to great advantage. I am able to communicate effectively across all spectrums, which is always helpful in my role as a Recruiter. I also feel I can guide younger people as they embark on a brand new career path. I look forward to expanding my role here and working with everyone as time goes on.

With over 30 years of leadership in Army Reserve and civilian nursing, I've found that military values like loyalty, duty, respect, honor, integrity, and personal courage align perfectly with Mount Sinai's values. Both focus on protecting vulnerable patients and colleagues. As a Head Nurse, Officer in Charge, and Family Readiness Liaison Coordinator in the military, I supported soldiers and families much like we do at Mount Sinai. Now, as Nursing Clinical Coordinator in Oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital, I'm committed to serving cancer patients and their families, always promoting teamwork and supporting those in our care.

I was a Hospital Corpsman (Petty Officer Third Class) and served at the US Navy Regional Medical Centers both in San Diego, Cal and Newport Rhode Island. After being Honorably Discharged, I joined the NYPD in which I served for 21 years where I conducted threat assessments on all twelve HHC hospitals in the City of New York. I was offered a job at Mount Sinai Queens as the Director of Safety & Security, Fire Safety and Emergency Management where I stayed for nine years and I am presently the Director of Safety & Security at Mount Sinai South Nassau.

My Air Force background has profoundly influenced my approach to social work at Mount Sinai. The crisis intervention and resource management skills I developed in the military now directly translate to supporting patients facing complex medical challenges. By embracing active listening, advocacy, and patient-focused care, I help individuals navigate serious health journeys, from addiction recovery to chronic illness management. My military-honed resilience and adaptability enable me to provide comprehensive, empathetic support that honors each patient's unique experience.

I am connecting my experiences of counseling soldiers as a U.S. Army Chaplain Candidate in the U.S. Army, with my love for providing counseling services within the Employee Assistance Program at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. I am identifying my deployments to Germany, Bosnia, and Iraq as one of the catalysts for my ability to convey compassion, warmth, and empathy to a vast array of clients throughout the Mount Sinai Health System. Moreover, I strongly feel like my service within The Mount Sinai Health System continues a legacy of service that first started in the military.

I am a proud Navy Veteran with 23 years under my belt.
Military training prepared me to manage and adapt to any situation. Mount Sinai is the perfect place to use that ingenuity and drive to achieve the goals of this “Honor Roll” institution. Just like in the military, Mount Sinai welcomes diversity, promoting all to thrive here.
I love being a contributing member here and the overall attitude of “We will find a way!”

I joined Mount Sinai Hospital, Ichan School of Medicine where I work for the Institute for Critical Care Medicine. My military journey provides the structure I need to be a squared away person. I pride myself to be mentally ready to work, willing to help faculty and coworkers, and being available and open to tackle and complete tasks assigned. Military instilled to be the best I can be and being an employee at Mount Sinai has allowed me to experience healthcare in a complete picture. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk with many people sharing their experiences from treating patients to helping our system providers with the administrative tasks allowing everyone to feel included in the “together we can” statement. I’ve come to appreciate my Mount Sinai chapter as I believe in helping those who need it and that is what I’ve experienced being here as an employee.

As a soldier, I am sworn to uphold and sustain military values such as loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. These values are not limited to my role as a soldier. My military experience helped to develop my resilience, flexibility, and resourcefulness to support executives and colleagues alike in the workforce. My goal has always been to find solutions to the most complex tasks and my family at Mount Sinai continues to foster my personal and professional growth.
